Once a week my nine year old asks the same question, "Mom, can we go to the library?"
How do I say no to that? Last week I did. I was busy. Very busy...I forgot exactly what I was so busy with, but trust me it was important. And besides, I believe its good for a child to be told "no" occasionally, just so they understand the real world. It went something like this:
"Mom, can we go to the library?"
"No."
"Mom, what do you mean, 'no'?
"I mean, 'No, Kenny."
"Do you mean 'not right now no' or 'not today no'?
"I mean, 'No.'"
"Okay........Mom. When do you think we can go to the library?"
He starts middle school in the fall and when he went for the tour of his new school he wanted to see two things, the computer lab and the library. Someone asked if he was going to go to the private school. He asked, "How big is the library?" I'm glad. There are certainly worse places he could be.
Yesterday I said yes and we went to the library. He checked out ten books about trains. Model trains, history of trains, steam engines, toy trains. The child LOVES trains....and libraries.
Tell me a little about your child. What do they absolutely love?
My son is only 2 but he loves trains also. And dinosaurs and balls and cars lol.
ReplyDeleteKenny sounds just like my Grace. She starts middle school in the fall as well and absolutely loves to read and is forever asking me when can we go to the library. I love that she loves to read. And she loves soccer.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're having a super day :)

I love that he loves the library! I have so many good memories of going as a kid. We have a beautiful one in town now. Thanks for inspiring me! I think I'll go. Now if only my 17 year-old son would go with me....
ReplyDeleteThat is so great that your son loves the library...and trains! My daughter loves to draw...and she's got some talent there too. I learn alot from her day through her drawings...since usually all I get from her after asking her how her day at school went is "nothing"
ReplyDeleteSo...how long do you have? :) I have no children of my own just yet, but I gained three bonus babies when I married my husband (bb sounds so much better than stepchild, don'tcha think?)
ReplyDeleteAnsleigh is 12 and she loves monkeys. and her daddy. Not in that order. :) She loves having her nails done and is definitely a quallity time love speaker (yes, we're Gary Chapman fans!)
Ivy (aka mini-me) is 9 and she LOVES to draw, paint, sketch, you name it. Anything artsy fits her just fine. She also loves Polly Pockets.
Corbin is my little man and he's 7. He loves superheroes. Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, "Worverine" (as he calls him)...
That's very cute! My kids are library fans as well, although yours may be a little more so! :) By the way, Jenilee mentioned your post from last weeks Wednesday Walk on her blog today. Check it out! http://the-goodwinfamily.blogspot.com/2010/05/wednesdays-walk-rest-of-story.html
ReplyDeleteI love that your son loves to read and knows where to find good books. My boys loved legos, they would sit and build with legos for hours.
ReplyDeleteNow my oldest loves his fiancee, my middle son loves anything active, and my youngest is loving his mission!
We live on a "farm" we have cows and a large pasture. Cam's favorite place is down at a creek that runs through the woods in our pasture. He will spend hours playing there - that's the first place he takes his friends when they come over, that's his go to feel good place.
ReplyDeleteMy boys love video games. My daughter loves Facebook and her phone. And me? I love your son!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool that he loves books. My son loves the computer. He gets on youtube and watches clips of game shows. He loves it and we are happy he does. The computer is a God-send for him.
ReplyDeleteAwww... I love this post.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it a blessing that he loves to read? My 12 year old daughter LOVES to read too.
LOVE that he loves the library, Leanne!!! So wonderful. My youngest daughter LOVES "Tom & Jerry" cartoons. Yes, ALL of them. She can be in a dazed and sleepless state and still ask, "Can I watch a Tom & Jerry with you?" adn my eldest daughter absolutely LOVES the BIG CITY (chicago). She would go downtown every single day if she could. It's an exciting place for this suburban girl!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing better than the smell of a library book...
ReplyDeleteMy Baby? Loves tennis balls, shaving cream caps, and barking. A lot. And loudly.
How wonderful that Kenny is a reader; bet he is very smart. My granddaughter, 19 mos., has always loved to be read to and she loves to sit and turn the pages of her board books. I hope Susanna is like Kenny and that the love of reading persists!
ReplyDeleteThe smell of a library book, I could almost smell it when Sara mentioned that, I always loved the library and all my kids had library cards, our youngest has a son due in August and if Papa has anything to do with it we will be making a trip to get him a card :)
ReplyDeleteThe Daughter used to love going to the library with me...but now, she pretty much tries to avoid going anywhere with me...but that will change...I hope...when she is a little older.
ReplyDeleteI love the library, and I love bookstores.
I Love it when kids love to read~ =)
ReplyDeleteMy little girl asks me to visit the library Website!! Mom will you see if the library can hold blank and blank books for me?!! =)
love that about her!!
Hey girl. I have been absent from your blog for awhile. Miss me? Wish I could blog and read blogs 24/7. Dang family and real life keep gettin in the way. I love that your son loves libraries. My dad was a librarian and I grew up with a love of libraries and books. My kids happy place is the trampoline. Best invention ever.
ReplyDeleteRight now, they equally love THE PARK. We have a playground within walking distance, and it's their favorite thing. :-) My 6-year-old, though, I think she's going to be the same way about the library.
ReplyDeleteWell, my little ones are big ones now... so I'm going to choose to say what their little ones like... which is a toss-up between the playgrounds when they stay with us... or my homemade spaghetti.
ReplyDeleteBut happily they ALL take after me and LOVE to read, too! =)
My son is only 18 months old, but I can say unequivocally that he LOVES BUHMOONS! (that is balloons to you lay folk). Nothing makes him happier or more excited than seeing them. He will squeal it, yell it, scream it, laugh it, cry it at the top of his lungs!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is almost three and she LOVES, WORSHIPS and ADORES make up and jewelry. Can't get enough of either, EVER! Oh, and PINK!
Can't wait to see what interests them as they get older.
My son is a cartoon fanatic right now. He could watch TV all day if we'd let him! He also loves reading Dr. Seuss books...which I love too :)
ReplyDeleteThe three oldest LOVE the library, as I'm sure the youngest will, too. Check here for a special surprise I left for you http://mylifethroughpink.blogspot.com/2010/05/blog-award-for-me.html
ReplyDeleteBoth of my children love to read, and buy books. When they were younger we would often visit the library, but now every time we go shopping the trip is not complete without our last visit and purchase happening at Barnes and Noble.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to pick up a button, and join us for "Mia Monday"
you're lucky it's "mom, can i go to the library" and not, "mom, can i play video games." it's great when you find kids that are actually interested in the world around them and not just the tv.
ReplyDeleteMy boys are teenagers, so girls, music & video games, lol!
ReplyDeleteI'm stopping by to welcome you to SITS!
Is he the brains of the family? Sounds like he is headed that way!
ReplyDeleteOut of five, I have two readers! They are like me, they'd rather not be bothered if they have a book in their hands.LOL
Of the others, one is a social butterfly and the other two don't care what they are doing as long as it is outside!
Have a blessed weekend!
The Boy Child (7.5) LOVES sports, especially football and sometimes NASCAR. The Girl Child (6) loves Horses and wants to know why she can't have one of her own...apparently I am ruining her life :)
ReplyDeleteWell, my daughter Jasmine who is 2 and a half absolutely loves dogs...they can me real, stuffed, pictures....any kind. She makes me pick out the Cottonelle tissue paper bc of the puppy on it and she sleeps with a stone statue of a dog even though this I am sure is a hazard. When I asked her if she wanted a baby brother or sister she proudly said "a dog"!
ReplyDeleteHi! Thank you so much for visiting my blog! OH I feel your pain with the insomnina!!Are the pills working? If not go back to that dr! Let me know.
